However, in most of the developing countries, due to the limitation of resources it is almost impossible to educate all of their citizens through on-campus teaching. Huge amount of money is warranted to establish the infrastructure for on-campus teaching which is out of the reach of the developing countries. In this circumstances, to educate their huge population the developing countries are to depend on open learning and distance education system. However, a question still stands: can the educators dissimulate knowledge to the learners smoothly through this new system of education? Some recent research shows that the graduates of the open and distance learning institutions in the developing countries are treated as second-grade graduates. // This paper aims to identify the barriers to the development of distance and Open learning system in Bangladesh and suggest possible alternatives may be followed to overcome the barriers. //
- ItemOpen AccessDistance Education and Open Learning in a Developing Country like Bangladesh: Philosophy and Reality(2002-07) Sultana, Sadia Afroze; Kamal, Mostafa AzadPCF2 // Distance education is thought to be an effective way of educating people of all sections in society. The delivery system in distance education is different than that in the conventional on-campus teaching. However, distance education is considered as close substitute for the conventional on-campus teaching keeping in mind the premises that different types of media (print, audio, video, telephone, computerbased communication system, etc.) are synchronized in the delivery process in distance education and open learning system. Of course, in this age of information super high-way, nobody can challenge the possibility that effective and quality education can be offered through different types of modern media – without any real class room. Real class room can be substituted by virtual class room environment. Now a question frequently strikes our mind: “Is the realities in the developing countries like Bangladesh, where access to modern technologies is very limited, meet the philosophy of distance education?” // This paper aims at examining whether there is any gap between the philosophy of the distance education and the reality in the developing countries like Bangladesh and identify the factors lies behind this gap. Then suggests some measures to be taken to minimize the gap. In the paper, we have analysed the data derived from a survey on the Secondary School Certificate programme of Bangladesh Open University. //
- ItemOpen AccessEmployability Mismatch in Business Education through ODL: A Study on the Commonwealth MBA/MPA Program of Bangladesh Open University(2022-09) Kamal, Mostafa Azad; Raihan, Mohammad Zahir; Forhad, Md Abdur Rahman; Shelly, AsmaPCF10 Sub-theme: Fostering Lifelong Learning // This study investigates the skills catered through the Commonwealth MBA (CEMBA) and Commonwealth MPA (CEMPA) program of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and their appropriateness in the context of the socio-economic transformation of Bangladesh. The study is driven by two pertinent research questions: R1. Are the skills catered by the CEMBA program relevant to the current needs of the job market? R2. What are the scopes for revisiting the CEMBA curriculum and making it meaningful in the current workplace contexts? The study found a significant skill mismatch in the Commonwealth MBA/MPA graduates. Therefore, the need for transforming the curriculum and instructional methods has been emphasized by the respondents. // Paper ID 9770
- ItemOpen AccessOpen and Distance Learning to Empower Rural Women: Bangladesh(2004-07) Sultana, Sadia Afroze; Kamal, Mostafa AzadPCF3 // This paper aims at explaining the scope of using ODL materials for women empowerment in the rural areas through enhancing literacy, business skill and social awareness. The paper also identifies possible barriers in using ODL tools to enhance women literacy and business skill and recommends some possible corrective measures. In this case, the possibility of partnership with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), role of technologies has been verified. Experience of BOU’s (Bangladesh Open University) Secondary School Certificate (SSC) programme and COL-BOU project on entrepreneurship skill training for rural women have also been explained in the paper.
- ItemOpen AccessTeachers’ Perceptions Regarding Technology-Enabled Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic: A Study on the BBA Program of Bangladesh Open University(2022-09) Shelly, Asma Akter; Kamal, Mostafa AzadPCF10 Sub-theme: Inspiring Innovations // Technology usage has dramatically been increased in higher education institutions during covid-19 pandemic. However, a question emerges whether the teachers are ready and motivated for technology-enabled teaching learning (TEL) practices? This study aims to identify the teachers’ attitude toward TEL and also audit their readiness for facilitating TEL. Also, several aspects regarding the teachers' perceptions about their technological skills, access to electronic devices, and pedagogical skills for technology-based education etc. are also analyzed. A set of structured questionnaires have been administered in the study among the 50 teachers in the BBA program of Bangladesh Open University (BOU). In addition, a focus group discussion with selected teachers and TEL experts was used in the study. For data analysis, descriptive statistics like mean and percentages have been used. Study found that that most teachers of the BBA program of BOU had positive attitude towards TEL during Covid-19 pandemic though many of them has lack of technological skills. // Paper ID 1135
