PublicationCelebrating Open Universities( 2007-01-10)Vardhaman Mahaveer Kota Open University, 3rd Convocation, 10 January 2007, Celebrating Open Universities, Remarks by Sir John Daniel on the conferment of the honorary degree, Doctor of Letters honoris causa // I congratulate the graduates and I thank you for making me an honorary doctor of Vardhaman Mahaveer Kota Open University. I am proud to become a member of your academic community. // University convocations are enjoyable events. I estimate that I have taken part in 150 such ceremonies. At the UK Open University I shook hands and talked to some 50,000 graduates as they were presented for their degrees. // For me today's convocation is an anniversary and a double milestone. 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of my involvement with open universities. It was in 1972 that I went to the British Open University as an intern, had a conversion experience and re-oriented my career to advance the concept of open universities.

Such recognition is always a thrill, but when the degree is awarded at the first convocation ceremony of a newly named university the pleasure is even greater. // Today's graduates, whose presence here today crowns years of hard work, are the founder members of a new generation of alumni who proudly carry the name Thompson Rivers University on their diplomas and degrees. // I congratulate you all on your success and thank your families for the support that they have given you. A Convocation ceremony is a very important milestone in the journey of those of you who have now completed a critical stage of your lives, and are stepping onto the next stage of further education, or the world of work. To the institution, it marks an occasion to see many of its students whose talents it has nurtured, and whose faculties it has helped develop, move on successfully to the next stage of their lives. I am delighted to be a part of this happy occasion, and I thank the Vice Chancellor, Dr Vasudha Kamat, herself a powerful role model for women, for giving me this opportunity to be with you today.

Honorary graduates in North America are expected to share some platitudes about life with the graduates. That's not my style so I shall simply tell you why I revere McGill University and why continuing education has been important to me.

PublicationLearning for Life in a Changing World( 2004-11-15)My task, in these opening remarks, is to do four things. First, I shall situate COL and explain what it is and what it is not. Second, I shall explain how this new work on literacy and livelihoods fits into our wider programme. Third, simply to provide a starting point for the discussions, I shall risk some general comments on literacy, on livelihoods and on the relationship between them. Finally I shall re-emphasise the mission of COL.
