PublicationBeauty Therapy Courses from Botswana( 2015-08) Sibanda, Laura ; Mazhani, One ; Deurwaarder, Jan ; Muraya, Christine ; Mead Richardson, AlisonThe Botswana Technical Education Programme (BTEP) is managed by the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DTVET) in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development. BTEP is outcomes-based and is designed to provide both, pre-employment training for secondary school leavers and, training for those in the workplace who aspire towards attaining a qualification. The programme has been developed in cooperation with employers to ensure a match between training and skills needed by industry. BTEP consists of 25 vocational areas at 4 levels, Foundation, Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Diploma. One of the vocational areas is Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy. In order to expand access to TVET in Botswana, staff from Francistown College of Technical and Vocational Education and Gaborone Technical College developed print based distance learning modules. DTVET has committed to produce open education resources and has made three Certificate level modules available.

PublicationBiogas Production for Domestic Use: A Flexible Learning Course( 2015-01) Macharia, Francis NThis course aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to plan, build and operate a biogas plant for domestic purposes. It is designed for dairy farmers, masons, prospective biogas plan operators and other stakeholders working with this technology. Over reliance on wood fuel has depleted forests and endangered the environment. In addition, smoke inhalation, soot and ash have been found to cause ill health amongst users of wood fuel. The other alternative source of fuel has been fossil sources such as crude oil, lignite, hard coal and natural gas. These are fossilized remains of dead plants and animals which are non-renewable resources whose reserves are depleted much faster than new ones are being formed. This has led to a search for alternate sources of energy such as wind, solar and biogas. Of all these sources, biogas has been found to be the most suitable for domestic use. This is because it is a renewable, simple and cheap to generate. Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to convert domestic or farm waste into biogas and bio-manure. This course was developed as part of the short-course offering from Thika Technical Training Institute, designed to provide skills training to meet the needs of the local community. Thika Technical Training Institute is a partner in the Commonwealth of Learning INVEST Africa partnership.

PublicationCommercial Food Preparation: Local Cuisine( 2016-09) TVET Unit: Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development of St. LuciaEmployers in Saint Lucia and the region continue to lament that employees lack the skills to operate productively and efficiently at the workplace. The local cuisine of a country is one of its unique selling points (USP) which sets it apart from other places and attracts visitors. As a country whose economy depends heavily on tourism, it is imperative that visitors continue to sample the appetizing foods that Saint Lucia has been known to create, both those that they may be familiar with in their home country and those that are unfamiliar. In that regard, a course in Commercial Food Preparation with an emphasis on preparing delicacies using local produce and variation in preparing imported produce will equip hospitality workers with the skills, knowledge and competencies of how to prepare our local produce and other produce using our signature methods and techniques as well as cater to the pallet of people of different cultures. This is likely to foster longevity of the local cuisine and maintain a particular standard of preparing foods. Moreover, since the course can be taken by any nationality, it will be a medium to market the local cuisine internationally. Most importantly, it is hoped that the emphasis on local cuisine will encourage practicing and up-coming food preparation personnel to develop even more creative ways of preparing our local produce.

PublicationGarment Production( 2016-09) TVET Unit: Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development of St. LuciaAbstract: Garment production is an area of skill under high demand. Saint Lucia is known for its artistry in costume making for carnival and creative garment designs for the event ‘Hot Couture’. Garment production is a viable field because clothing is a commodity that is needed by everyone year round. However, there is need for fashion designers to be more innovative in their designs. A course in garment production has the potential to foster designers’ creativity by augmenting designs that already exist or crafting new ones. Upcoming designers will be given the opportunity to be trained and certified which are added boosts to their competencies and chances for employment and entrepreneurship.

PublicationTour Guiding( 2006) Commonwealth of Learning ; Virtual University for the Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC)This 255-hour certificate course is intended for people who are already tour guides or who are aspiring to become tour guides. Specialty courses are three (3) credits and those involving a practical component are four (4) credits. Throughout this course, you will be asked to draw upon those experiences. The administering institution will determine how this course will take place. It may used for self-assessments or teacher-marked assessments. Institutions will also determine the length of assessments and how long learners will be allowed to complete them.

PublicationTransport and Logistics - Stevedoring: Level 1( 2009-12) Commonwealth of Learning ; Virtual University for the Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC)This course is intended for cargo handlers who are new to the stevedoring and ports industry, either in permanent or casual employment. The course focuses on the terminologies used in port and stevedoring operations, driving within a port environment, safety issues surrounding work in a port environment, communication skills, and the core knowledge and skills that relate to cargo operations. It also provides further skills in aspects of cargo operations that are location or enterprise specific, as well as in first aid. // This qualification has some standards in common with, and can lead on to Certificate in Stevedoring Levels 1 to 3, which are intended for cargo handlers and port machinery operators.
