Abstract
Since independence, the education policy of successive governments has focused on improving
and extending primary education and providing opportunities for Education for All (EFA).
Primary education was made free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 10
in 1991 and Bangladesh currently has one of the largest primary education systems in the
world. In 2000, there were 76,600 primary schools in Bangladesh and gross enrolment in
primary education reached over 96%. Net enrolment is estimated by the Directorate of Primary
Education to be around 80%.
