Against All Odds: Understanding Men’s Success Amid Disengagement from Education in the Caribbean

Abstract

The persistent issue of male disengagement with education has been a well-researched area in the Caribbean from the perspective of understanding reasons for disengagement. This research, based on narrative analysis of life-histories of 11 young men in the region who remained engaged with education and showed resilience and determination to fight all odds, identifies factors that contribute to such success. This is an important contribution to the literature in terms of analysing ‘success’ to understand ‘failure’.
