Introducing TALEEM: A System of ICT Supported Course Management for Quality Education IN CBSE Schools

Abstract

The Central Board of Secondary Education in India has more than 13,500 schools affiliated to it. Nearly 12 million students are studying in the K-12 classes of these schools spread all over India and in 20 other countries. To ensure better quality of education and keep pace with the emerging demands of ICT enabled educational processes, CBSE is working on the innovative 'Technology Augmented Learning and Education Environment Management' (TALEEM) methodology. // TALEEM is designed around regional clusters of CBSE Schools (called Sahodaya) to cooperatively manage the teaching - learning processes using a reference open publication of TALEEM Course Plan (TCP)as well as the TALEEM Lesson Plans (TLP) in each lesson unit for every course offered in the different classes. // TCP and its TLPs are developed by duly constituted Subject Matter Experts Group for each course. CBSE itself maintains the master reference TCP and TLPs for all courses in all the classes. These TCP and TLPs are published over a Wiki for open access. The TLPs are pedagogically structured with activities so designed to engage students and their parents as may be required. // Teachers of the participating schools refer to the recommended processes and activities as declared in the TCP and TLPs and conduct the same using local school LMS and related online systems. The TALEEM methodology allows the teachers to guide the students both on and off the school premises, use different modes of learning as deemed fit Teachers may even adapt the 'Flip Class' using Khan Academy videos and other Open Education Resources. They may engage the learners using pre-installed content in tablets of students. // TALEEM is its preliminary development and trial stage. All software systems and applications used are from the Free and Open Source category. To ensure the schools are equipped to manage the advanced ICT systems and processes, we propose to establish a network of regional 'Sahodaya Institute of Learning and Knowledge' for teachers training, ICT skills certification programs and professionals to manage the regional network of Sahodaya clusters of schools. // The TALEEM methodology of disciplined collaborative education may well be adapted to promote cooperation of regional clusters of schools/colleges/institutions using ICT and promote quality and inclusion in education. // Paper ID: 101
